Hearing the Voice of God

The Profound Inspiration

Have you ever had an idea, or were inspired by an idea that you thought was so good, so amazing that you were compelled to act? In that moment, the idea of failing never even crossed your mind. All you knew was that you HAD to act on this idea. Do you remember the last time this happened to you? Do you remember where you were at? Do you remember what you were doing? My guess is that wherever you were, whatever you were doing, that idea didn’t happen through amazing cinematic photography or cinematic special effects. It may have felt like it, because the thought was so profound it almost physically shook you. But it didn’t. The idea, the thought, the inspiration you had, was so powerful it literally caused you to get up to take action, and yet, that thought happened in the quietness of your own mind.

Hollywood has done an amazing job of helping God tell His story. They have added elaborate costumes, amazing sets, make-up and computer-generated special effects. For years we have sat in theater seats or in the comfort of our own homes, in awe of how God moves and reveals Himself on the screen. Then we listen to a sermon or teaching entitled, “How to Hear God’s Voice.” With glazed eyes and furrowed brows, we listen intently, wanting to understand, desperately wanting to hear His voice, but filtering our ability to do so through the lens of Hollywood’s silver screen.

What would happen if we removed Hollywood’s version of God for a moment and read the Bible’s version of God? Don’t get me wrong, I love movies just like anyone else, but when we attempt to interpret the voice of God through an entertainment experience, we immediately disqualify ourselves from the most amazing relationship ever created. So, what would happen if we removed Hollywood’s version of God for a moment and listened, in quiet, to God’s version of God? There’s no need for more sermons, classes or workshops, you already have everything you need. His voice is there, in the stillness of your own heart (John 10:27-30), in the whisper (Isaiah 30:21), in the revelation, the idea, in the inspiration that is so profound you can hardly wait to take action.
